CARRICK' CALCULATED GAMBLE ON MAINOO | MIDFIELDER
Following the recent turn around in Mainoo’s career as midfielder, a lot of reactions have raised eyebrows. One of the concerns was drawn from a former Premier league midfielder and star, Michael Carrick. Michael Carrick who is currently in charge of Old Trafford once remarked that Manchester United could build a very strong midfield around Mainoo.
On Rio meets, Carrick said “ I think he’s more of an attacker . I don’t see him as a holding midfielder” . Thus it is safe to say that the statement had sparked a lot of reactions as well, thereby questioning Mainoo’s initial role when he arrived Manchester United. Under Erik Ten Hag, Mainoo was handed his first midfield role in a game against Everton and it is safe to say it was really impressing. For England, he played a similar role as a No 8 alongside Declan Rice at the Euros, playing a starting role from the last group stage onwards.
Upon the eventual arrival of Amorim at Manchester United, that was the steering ocean for Mainoo’s midfielding career. Many rumored that the days of Mainoo’s famous midfield play was over. During the course of the season, Manchester United’s midfield witnessed a great turnaround as Mainoo was played as a false 9 and 10, a situation that was perceived as a challenge to Bruno Fernandes. This decision was one of the most important decisions made by Amorim. The decision came as results of Hojlund and Zirkzee’s cameos off the bench. Thus the decision was more like and indictment, that’s why he (Amorim) felt Mainoo playing out of position up front, represented the better option. It is pertinent to note here that Mainoo was only pressed into action there himself because Amorim had stated that he is “struggling to defend in midfield”, forcing Bruno to adjust to take on that deeper. In Amorim’s word, “I expect a lot from Kobbie Mainoo and again people think that sometimes you need to just give. I think its important for Kobbie to fight for his place”. In August,2025, he further told SKY SPORTS: “I believe a lot in Kobbie, more than everybody thinks, so I expect a lot from him”. These remarks followed United’s second fixture of the campaign against Fulham, marking the second consecutive match were Mainoo remained on the bench throughout.
Although Bruno Fernandes was on injury, what seemed like what would have been an opportunity for Mainoo to excel at the 10 position, he (Mainoo) also had an injury, strange right. That’s where everywhere went south for the outstanding midfielder. The injury was really fatal to United as there were also without Manuel Ugarte, Toby Collyer, Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo who could miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. As a result, Amorim was forced to play Casemeiro and Bruno Fernandes.
Mainoo’s absence was felt in recent matches, as United struggled to maintain balance in midfield amid injuries and managerial uncertainty. The injury was really bad that his return sparked a joyous outcome all over the United’s camp. Mainoo’s return could not come at a better time for a team that has lacked rhythm and control in the middle of the park since his injury. The return to training also suggests the medical staff are confident in his progress, with the young star showing no visible discomfort during the session. Although there have been speculations that Mainoo wasn’t really injured, many perceived it as a tool used to kick the young star out of the United team. Situations like this can’t really be deliberated upon as the player never came out to claim so. Following from from reliable sport news sources, manay recorded that the youngstar had a calf injury. The position was maintained by the team’s management
